Fondly known as “Our Mandaya Gandu,” Dr. Ambareesh had a remarkable political career, representing Mandya in the Lok Sabha on three occasions and holding various key positions as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and a minister at both the state and national levels.

Political Journey

Introduction to Politics (1994)

Ambareesh began his political journey by campaigning for the Congress Party in the 1994 Assembly elections. Although he initially parted ways with Congress after two years, this marked the beginning of his dynamic and influential political career.

Affiliation with Janata Dal (1996)

In 1996, at the request of then Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Ambareesh joined the Janata Dal, expanding his political footprint and demonstrating his adaptability in the evolving political landscape.

Electoral Milestones

First Parliamentary Victory (1998): Ambareesh won his first election to the Lok Sabha, securing the Mandya seat with overwhelming support from his loyal fan base. His victory marked his entry into the 12th Lok Sabha.

Rejoining Congress (1999): After rejoining Congress, Ambareesh was re-elected to the 13th and 14th Lok Sabha, continuing to represent Mandya with distinction.

Ministerial Roles

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (2006): Ambareesh was appointed Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet, further showcasing his leadership on a national platform.

Cauvery Water Dispute (2008): In a bold display of integrity, Ambareesh resigned from his ministerial role in protest against the release of water to Tamil Nadu during the Cauvery water dispute. His decision to prioritise the interests of his Mandya constituents cemented his reputation as a leader who stood by his people.

Service in Karnataka State Government

Minister of Housing (2013): As Karnataka’s Minister of Housing under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Ambareesh championed the "Housing for All" initiative. Under his leadership, the state saw a record number of houses built for slum dwellers through central housing schemes such as JNNURM. His holistic governance ensured these homes were equipped with essential amenities like drinking water, electricity, and proper roads.

Receiving a prestigious award from President Pranab Mukherjee in 2014 for Karnataka’s achievements in housing was a defining moment in his political career.

Conclusion of Political Career

Retirement from Active Politics (2016): Despite repeated appeals from Congress leaders, Ambareesh retired from active politics in 2016. His decision to leave on his terms reflected his resolve to remain true to himself, ending his political journey with dignity.
